Common questions

What counts as a node?

A node is any server, VM, Raspberry Pi, desktop, laptop, industrial computer, or embedded device capable of running containers via Docker, Kubernetes, or another orchestrator: whether it hosts the Portainer Server or is managed by one.

Can I use this for a small business?

No. The Home & Student license is strictly non-commercial. Any business use: regardless of company size: is not permitted and license keys will be revoked. For business use, see the Enterprise IT plans.

What support is included?

Community support via GitHub Discussions. The Portainer community is active and responsive. For commercial support, upgrade to a Business Edition plan.

Do Docker, Swarm, and Kubernetes need separate licenses?

No. A single Portainer license covers all orchestrators and container runtimes across your licensed nodes.

Common questions

What counts as a node?

Any server, VM, Raspberry Pi, desktop, laptop, industrial computer, or embedded device capable of running containers that is either running the Portainer Server or is managed by one. Node tiers are measured in logical CPUs (vCPUs): 1 vCPU = 1 Intel/AMD CPU core hyperthread. In non-virtual environments, 2 physical cores = 1 vCPU.

Can I add more nodes to my subscription?

Starter and Scale plans have a fixed node count for the term and can be adjusted at renewal. Enterprise plans support mid-term node additions: contact sales to expand your license at any point during your subscription. Prices are in USD and exclude local, regional, or national taxes.

Do Docker, Swarm, and Kubernetes need separate licenses?

No. A single Portainer license covers all orchestrators and runtimes across your licensed nodes: no additional fees for using Docker, Swarm, and Kubernetes together.

Do you offer professional services?

Yes. Enterprise customers have access to consulting, implementation, configuration, and support engagements. We also offer an Engineer-as-a-Service model: a Portainer platform engineer works directly alongside your existing team, providing hands-on expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. A full Managed Platform Services option is also available for organizations that want Portainer to run the platform on their behalf.

Can I pitch Portainer to my manager?

Yes: we have resources to help. Ask us for our pitch email template and the Portainer Solution Overview whitepaper. Contact our team and we'll send them directly.

Is there a free trial for Enterprise?

Yes. Enterprises can request an Enterprise Free Trial and we'll create a trial license key tailored to your environment. Contact sales to arrange this.

Edge Node Licensing

Priced for real edge hardware

Edge and IIoT nodes are licensed by hardware class, not cloud vCPU. Each type reflects the constraints of the hardware in the field.

Edge Server
≤ 16 cores

Single-socket servers deployed at the edge. Rack or tower form factor. Suitable for regional hubs and site servers.

Edge Gateway / Industrial PC
≤ 10 cores

Industrial PCs and gateways on the plant floor or in field enclosures. Fanless, DIN-rail, or rugged form factors.

Edge Linux PLC / Mini PC
≤ 4 cores

Small form factor mini PCs and Linux-based PLCs. Typical deployments include CNC integration and conveyor control.

IoT Sensor Node
≤ 1 GHz

Low-power sensor nodes and single-board computers at the far edge. Raspberry Pi-class and below.

Common questions

How is edge node licensing different from standard nodes?

Edge and IIoT nodes are licensed by hardware class rather than vCPU count. This reflects the real-world constraints of industrial and IoT hardware, where a "node" might be a $30 sensor rather than a cloud VM.

Can Portainer operate in disconnected / air-gapped environments?

Yes. The Async Edge Agent is specifically designed for intermittently connected and fully offline environments. Commands queue at the server and execute when connectivity is restored. No continuous connection is required.

Do you offer a live demo?

Yes. Contact our IIoT specialist team and we'll arrange a live demo tailored to your environment: factory, energy, logistics, or distributed retail fleet.

Does the IIoT team require Kubernetes expertise?

No. Portainer's Industrial IoT Portal abstracts Kubernetes entirely. Operators interact with machines, applications, locations, and status: not Kubernetes primitives. No YAML knowledge required.
